The search for a nine-year-old girl who disappeared during a morning walk with her dog has ended in Smolensk. The incident occurred on February 24, after which the regional department of the Investigative Committee opened a criminal case.
According to the investigation, at about 08:00 the child left the house on Marshal Yeremenko Street. About an hour later, the mother became worried about her daughter's absence and went in search of her. She only managed to find the dog, who returned without a mistress.
On social networks, local residents actively discussed possible versions of what happened. Some claimed to have seen a suspicious car nearby, in which a child could allegedly be put. Others drew attention to the open hatch in the courtyard, suggesting that the girl could have fallen through there.
Employees of the Investigative Committee of Russia for the Smolensk Region, the police, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, as well as volunteers of the Salvar search and rescue squad and local concerned residents were involved in large-scale search activities.
Search and discovery of an abducted child in an apartment
On Thursday, February 26, the Smolensk Salvar search and rescue team reported that the missing schoolgirl had been found alive. The girl was in an apartment on Marshal Yeremenko Street.
During the large-scale operation, volunteers and law enforcement officers examined hundreds of objects: abandoned buildings, garage cooperatives, basements and attics, the territory of a former military unit, heating mains, as well as courtyards and entrances of residential buildings.
As noted in the Telegram channel of the detachment, thousands of caring people joined the search. About a thousand people arrived at the headquarters in person, and hundreds more helped remotely — they distributed guidance, delivered products, and closed current requests. According to the volunteers, the tragedy united the city.
According to reports, it was possible to get on the trail thanks to a car recorded by surveillance cameras. An additional role was played by the SIM card found in the car and the results of the DNA examination.
Detention of a child abduction suspect
On February 26, investigators from the regional directorate of the Investigative Committee (IC) of Russia, together with the operational staff of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, detained the suspect in the abduction. He turned out to be 43-year-old Sergey G., who had previously been convicted of drug possession.
The footage published on February 27 on the Telegram channel of the official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia Irina Volk shows how the girl is being taken out of the entrance of an apartment building. During the interrogation, the man said that he had kept the child in the apartment where his roommate lived. A criminal case has been opened against the attacker, his actions are qualified under Article 126 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Kidnapping").
The prosecutor's office of the Smolensk region reported that the detainee is already in custody, and the issue of the measure of restraint will be considered by the court in the near future.
According to the agency, the girl's condition is assessed as satisfactory. On the morning of February 27, it is planned to transfer the child to his parents. In the future, psychologists will work with her.
