The boat that invaded the waters and opened fire was stolen from a resident of the Florida Keys by a tiler who worked for him. This was reported on February 26 by NBC 6 South Florida TV channel with reference to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

"The vessel that was reportedly involved in a deadly shootout off the coast of Cuba could have been stolen from the Florida Keys," the publication says.

It is specified that the owner of the vessel suspects the tiler who worked for him of theft. He believed that the employee had taken the boat for fishing. In addition, the victim said that the tiler has relatives in Cuba.

The press service of the Presidency and the Government of Cuba, citing a statement from the republic's Interior Ministry on February 25, reported that those detained from a boat that entered Cuban waters who opened fire confessed to terrorist intentions. It was noted that the detained vessel, registered in Florida, was carrying 10 armed men.

Later, The New York Times reported that the boat that opened fire did not belong to the US Navy or the Coast Guard. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that the employees of the American administration were not involved in the incident.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, in turn, called the incident an aggressive provocation by the United States aimed at escalating the situation and detonating the conflict.
