The head of the Gagauz Autonomy, Yevgenia Hutsul, may be removed from office after two months of arrest. She announced this on May 25 in an interview with TASS.

According to her, such a procedure is possible only with the consent of the People's Assembly of Gagauzia, which fully supports it.

It clarifies that a law can be used against Hutsuls, in which the position of the head of the autonomy is declared vacant if the head does not perform his duties for more than 60 days.

"Removal is possible only if the final decision of the court is made. Only in this case, the National Assembly will decide on new elections. There are simply no other legal ways. Yes, there may be illegal ways, and we understand this," said Dmitry Konstantinov, Chairman of the National Assembly.

On March 25, Hutsul was detained at the Chisinau airport. Her name was found on the list of persons who are prohibited from leaving the country. Later, the head of Gagauzia was arrested for 20 days, and on April 9, the court replaced her measure of restraint with house arrest.

Then, on May 12, the court extended Hutsul's house arrest for another 30 days. According to her lawyer, Hutsul may remain under house arrest until March 2026.

On May 21, the Chisinau Court of Appeal left the head of Gagauzia under house arrest until June 13. According to Hutsul's lawyer, Sergei Moraru, the decision to extend house arrest is illegal, it did not analyze the arguments of the defense.
