The European Union may consider the possibility of unfreezing the shares of Russian businessman Oleg Deripaska in the construction company Strabag in the amount of € 2 billion in order to transfer them to the Austrian Raiffeisen Bank. This was reported on October 3 by the Financial Times newspaper, citing sources.

It is clarified that in July, Raiffeisen Bank reported that the results of the entire Raiffeisen Bank International banking group were significantly affected by the decision of the Russian court to compensate Rasperia Trading Limited. In May, the Central Bank of Russia withdrew the equivalent of €1.87 billion from the account of the Russian division of the Austrian bank and transferred it to Rasperia.

According to the Financial Times, the unfreezing of Deripaska's assets and their transfer to Raiffeisen Bank should serve as compensation for the decision of the Russian court. The newspaper clarifies that the proposal to unfreeze assets has already been included in the draft EU sanctions against Russia.

Earlier, on October 1, Bloomberg, citing sources, said that in response to possible attempts to seize Russian assets abroad, Russia is developing a plan to nationalize and quickly sell foreign companies operating in the country. For example, UniCredit, Raiffeisen Bank, PepsiCo, Mondelez, and others operate in the Russian Federation.

On the same day, it was reported that the leaders of the European Union (EU) unanimously supported the use of frozen Russian assets to provide Ukraine with a loan of 140 billion euros. To implement such a plan, "it is necessary to clarify some legal aspects." At the same time, the head of EU diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, said before the informal summit of EU heads of state in Copenhagen that not all European states support the idea of allocating a loan.
