On Monday, July 7, 2025, Ivan Kupala falls — the same day of the summer solstice, but according to the old style.

For our ancestors, Ivan Kupala was the most fun and at the same time mysterious date of summer. On the night of the 7th, people gathered in nature. Women who did not come to the festivities with the villagers were considered witches.

They rested, laughed, the girls guessed at their betrothed, jumped over the campfire. It was believed that the couple who successfully overcome the obstacle of fire, holding hands, would be inseparable.

Swimming in open reservoirs was not allowed in Russia. There was an opinion that evil spirits could drag a person to the bottom.

Our ancestors made a wish. They stayed up all night to keep the evil spirits away from the house and livestock.

It was not accepted to borrow money: superstition says that a loan can lead to impoverishment of the family.

Ivan Kupala is a pagan holiday, it exists only in the national calendar. In Orthodoxy, June 7 is the Nativity of John the Baptist, who predicted the coming of Jesus and baptized him in the waters of the Jordan.

Earlier, Izvestia told about the history, traditions and signs of the national holiday Agrafena Kupalnitsa.
