- Istanbul's ex-mayor Imamoglu was asked to serve up to 2,352 years in prison in a corruption case.
The Turkish prosecutor's office has demanded from 828 to 2352 years in prison for former Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who is accused of espionage, corruption and fraud. This was reported by Sabah newspaper on November 12.
"According to the charges, he is personally involved in the following crimes: creation of a criminal organization, receiving bribes (12 episodes), money laundering (7 episodes), fraud to the detriment of state institutions (7 episodes)," the material says.
According to the indictment, Imamoglu and his team created a "criminal empire" in 10 years, causing damage to the state worth 161 billion liras. Investigators also believe that part of the foreign loans to the mayor's office — 13.8 billion of 69.5 billion lira — was transferred to companies associated with this criminal network.
On March 19, Turkish law enforcement authorities issued a warrant for Imamoglu's detention. An anti-corruption operation has been launched against the Istanbul administration. The mayor of the city was arrested on March 23. After that, the country's Interior Ministry reported that Imamoglu had been temporarily suspended from his duties. Shortly after the arrest, mass protests began in the republic. On April 30, an Istanbul court arrested 18 more suspects who are being investigated for corruption against Imamoglu.
