In Angarsk, investigators have filed another charge against the "Angarsk maniac" Mikhail Popkov over the murder of two women in 2008. This was announced on August 28 by the press service of the Investigative Committee (IC) of the Russian Federation.

"The investigative authorities of the Investigative Committee of Russia in the Irkutsk region have resumed the investigation of the criminal case initiated in 2008 upon the discovery of the bodies of two women," the message posted on the Telegram channel says.

According to the agency, based on the case materials and the handwriting of the attacker, investigators were able to establish Popkov's involvement in the crime.

The investigation established that in August 2008, the accused drove a car to a site located on the Moskovsky Tract in Angarsk, where he met two women. In the process of getting to know them, there was a conflict, during which Popkov strangled one of the girls with a rope, and then killed the other in a similar way.

The person involved in the case was charged with committing a crime under paragraph "a" of Part 2 of Article 105 of the Criminal Code ("Murder"). It is noted that he fully admitted his guilt. The investigators are requesting that the accused be given a preventive measure in the form of detention.

The regional prosecutor's office, whose message was published on the department's Telegram channel, stressed that Popkov would remain in jail until the necessary investigative actions were carried out.

Earlier, on April 9, Popkov was charged in the Irkutsk region with murder committed almost 14 years ago. According to investigators, in May 2011, in the Angarsk park behind the Sovremennik recreation center, the accused met a local resident he had previously met with whom he had a conflict. As a result, Popkov hit the victim several times with an axe he had with him, and then poured a flammable liquid over her body and set it on fire.

Popkov himself, while serving a life sentence, confirmed the murder and fully admitted guilt in the crime.

In January 2024, the press service of the regional prosecutor's office reported that he had been transferred from Irkutsk to Mordovia, noting that he had been given a final sentence of life imprisonment to be served in a special regime colony.

The "Angarsk maniac" is considered the bloodiest criminal in the modern history of Russia.: He has 86 victims to his credit. Popkov committed all his crimes in the Irkutsk region from 1992 to 2010.

In 2015, Popkov was convicted of 22 murders and received his first life sentence. He was sentenced for the second time three years later, when it was possible to prove his involvement in 59 more deaths.

In July 2021, the court sentenced Popkov to nine years and eight months in prison in the case of two more murders committed in 1995. He received his last sentence in November 2023, when he was sentenced to another 10 years in prison.
