Former Kursk Region Governor Alexei Smirnov and his ex-deputy Alexei Dedov have signed a cooperation agreement with the investigation into embezzlement during the construction of fortifications on the border with Ukraine. This was reported by TASS on August 20, citing a law enforcement source.

"Smirnov and Dedov pleaded guilty and entered into a pre—trial cooperation agreement," the publication says.

According to a TASS source, Igor Grabin, the former deputy of the former head of the Kursk Region Development Corporation, Vladimir Lukin, also wanted to make a deal with the investigation, but refused to admit guilt in embezzlement. Because of this, the agency has already rejected the deal. It is specified that Lukin, who also pleaded not guilty, was detained precisely according to Grabin's testimony.

According to Lukin's statements, a criminal case was subsequently opened on embezzlement during the construction of fortifications, TASS writes.

Alexey Smirnov, the ex-governor of the Kursk region, was detained on April 16. According to Irina Volk, the official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, law enforcement officers charged Smirnov and his deputy Alexei Dedov with embezzlement of more than 1 billion rubles. It was clarified that they were allocated by JSC Kursk Region Development Corporation for the construction of fortifications on the border with Ukraine.

The Meshchansky District Court of Moscow has arrested the former head of the Kursk region for two months. Later, on June 6, his detention was extended until September 15.
