Stand-up comedian Ostanin to stand trial for insulting the feelings of believers
Stand-up comedian Artemy Ostanin (recognized in Russia as a terrorist and extremist) will stand trial, accused of inciting hatred and insulting the feelings of believers. This was reported on December 27 in the Telegram channel of the Moscow Prosecutor's office.
"The Meshchanskaya interdistrict prosecutor's office has approved an indictment against stand-up comedian Artemy Ostanin," the report says.
Ostanin is charged under the articles "Public actions expressing obvious disrespect for society and committed in order to offend the religious feelings of believers" and "Inciting hatred or enmity, as well as humiliation of human dignity."
On March 7 and 15, during his performances in Moscow, the comedian spoke negatively about people who were seriously injured and disabled, and insulted the feelings of believers from the stage.
Fragments of his speeches were published online. The criminal case has been referred to the court for consideration on the merits.
On October 18, a Moscow court extended the arrest of stand-up comedian Artemy Ostanin (listed as a terrorist and extremist in the Russian Federation) in a hate speech case. The court granted the request to extend Ostanin's arrest.
Ostanin's arrest while trying to leave Russia became known on March 18. According to the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, he is suspected of committing a crime under paragraph "a" of Part 2 of Article 282 of the Criminal Code ("Incitement of hatred or enmity, as well as humiliation of human dignity"). Later, during the interrogation, Ostanin apologized for his speech.
