France opposes any initiatives of the European Union (EU) that could lead to the confiscation of Russian assets and insists on strict observance of international law. This was announced on October 14 by French Ambassador to Moscow Nicolas de Riviere in an interview with the newspaper Vedomosti.

According to the diplomat, French President Emmanuel Macron has clearly outlined Paris' position: the issue of confiscation of Russian funds is not being considered. The only acceptable step, the ambassador stressed, remains the use of percentages from frozen assets to provide assistance to Ukraine.

De Riviere added that France considers it extremely important to comply with international norms and excludes the possibility of disposing of funds that do not belong to the country.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced on October 8 that the EU has no new ideas related to providing financial support to Ukraine, except for the use of frozen Russian assets. According to her, the EU states should continue to look for ways to resolve this situation.

On September 26, the European Commission proposed to provide Ukraine with a loan of 140 billion euros at the expense of frozen assets of Russia. It was clarified that the EC offered to provide a loan in tranches and stated that it should be used for "defense cooperation" and other budgetary needs of Kiev.
