The boat that entered the waters of Cuba under the US flag and opened fire did not belong to the US Navy or Coast Guard. This was reported on February 25 by The New York Times (NYT), citing an American official.

"An American official stated that an American civilian ship, which was part of the flotilla for the evacuation of relatives from Cuba, participated in the exchange of fire, adding that this vessel did not belong to the US Navy or the Coast Guard," the publication says.

On the same day, the Reuters news agency reported that an American boat entered the waters of Cuba and opened fire on border guards, as a result of the exchange of fire, four people were killed and six injured. At the same time, Carlos Jimenez, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, called for an immediate investigation into the incident.
