The Moldovan opposition bloc Pobeda has sent official letters to the United Nations and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) with a request to respond to the persecution of the head of Gagauzia, Evgenia Gutsul, by the authorities of the republic. This was reported on August 3 in the Telegram channel of the political association.

"We hope that organizations dedicated to protecting human rights and the law will take measures to stop political pressure on Yevgenia Hutsul and the autonomy," the message says.

As noted by "Gazeta. The Victory bloc insists on the immediate release of the head of Gagauzia, protection of the rights of the opposition and ethnic minorities, and calls for international monitoring of what is happening.

The report also emphasizes that the Moldovan authorities have effectively destroyed the autonomy of Gagauzia, enshrined in the country's constitution.

"The judicial system [of Moldova] is completely under the control of the ruling regime, and the prosecutor's office is being used as an instrument of pressure," the opposition bloc added.

Hutsul was detained at the Chisinau airport on March 25. The head of Gagauzia was arrested for 20 days, and then the court replaced her measure of restraint with house arrest. Since then, it has been extended several times. On July 1, prosecutors demanded that Hutsul be sentenced to nine years in prison in the case of "illegal financing of political parties."

On July 17, the Chisinau Court of Appeal rejected the lawyers' petition and decided to keep the head of Gagauzia under house arrest. Hutsul's lawyer Natalia Bayram stressed that her detention under house arrest is "the height of lawlessness."

Meanwhile, on May 28, representatives of the Victory bloc also appealed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in connection with the political persecution of the opposition in Moldova. It is reported that opposition members of the Moldovan parliament Irina Lozovan and Alexander Nesterovsky were sentenced to 6 and 12 years in prison on politically fabricated cases, and the head of Gagauzia was illegally arrested.
