The trial against the head of Gagauzia, Evgenia Gutsul, in Moldova is a vivid example of lawlessness and the fight against dissent. This was announced on Wednesday, July 9, by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, at a briefing.

"The trial of the legitimately elected head of Gagauzia, Evgenia Hutsul, is the clearest example of this very lawlessness," Zakharova said.

The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry also noted that the distinctive features of Moldovan President Maia Sandu's regime were "an open struggle against dissent, violations of fundamental democratic norms and human rights."

"At the same time, those who advocate building, for example, a constructive dialogue with Russia usually fall under attack. All this is accompanied by unsubstantiated accusations against us," Zakharova added.

According to her, as the parliamentary elections in Moldova approach, the policy of "tightening the screws" under the pretext of combating "fictional Russian propaganda" will only intensify. In addition, Zakharova called on international organizations to pay attention to the situation in the country.

Hutsul was detained at the Chisinau airport on March 25 when her name was found on the list of persons prohibited from leaving the country. Later, the head of Gagauzia was arrested for 20 days, and on April 9, the court replaced her measure of restraint with house arrest, since then it has been extended.

On July 1, prosecutors demanded that Hutsul be sentenced to nine years in prison in the case of "illegal financing of political parties." It was specified that the Hutsul verdict would be announced on August 5.
