Smirnov's arrest was extended to the former governor of the Kursk region
The Meshchansky District Court of Moscow has extended the arrest of Alexei Smirnov, the former governor of the Kursk region, accused of embezzling money allocated for the construction of fortifications in the region. This was reported on June 6 by a TASS correspondent from the courtroom.
It is specified that Smirnov will be in custody until September 15 of this year.
According to the agency, in court, the accused stated that, if released, he did not intend to hide from the investigation or obstruct it and asked to be transferred to house arrest.
Smirnov was detained on April 16. It is specified that the testimony against the ex-governor was given by the former CEO of the Kursk Region Development Corporation, Vladimir Lukin, who has already been arrested in the case of embezzlement during the construction of fortifications. On the same day, the Meshchansky District Court of Moscow arrested the former head of the Kursk region for two months.
According to Irina Volk, the official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, law enforcement officers charged Smirnov and his deputy Alexei Dedov with embezzlement of more than 1 billion rubles.
