- FT learned about the EU's plans to increase duties on agricultural products from Ukraine in June
The European Union (EU) is considering measures to increase duties on agricultural products from Ukraine from June 6 this year. This was reported on May 14 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper, citing sources.
"The EU plans to impose higher duties on Ukrainian imports within a few weeks, which could cause a serious blow to Kiev's economy," the article says.
According to the newspaper, the initiative will negatively affect corn, sugar, honey and poultry meat. It is noted that such conditions will drastically reduce duty-free quotas for Ukrainian agricultural products.
At the same time, the European Commission (EC) is currently negotiating a new trade agreement with the Ukrainian side, but it is also preparing for a transition from free trade to protectionist measures.
On March 28, Agence France-Presse reported that the EU may reduce imports of agricultural products from Ukraine from June 2025.
On April 4, members of the European Parliament (EP) from Poland, Piotr Muller and Waldemar Buda, addressed the European Commission (EC) with a request for a possible extension of the duty-free trade agreement with Ukraine, which expires on June 5, 2025. They recalled that since June 2022, the European Union (EU) has adopted a decision on the temporary abolition of duties and quotas on Ukrainian agricultural products, designed to support the Ukrainian economy.
