U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on February 5 backed U.S. leader Donald Trump's statement that the United States is ready to "take control" of the Gaza Strip.

"Gaza must be free of [Palestinian movement] Hamas. As the president said today, the United States is ready to take the lead and make Gaza beautiful again," the U.S. secretary of state wrote on social network X (formerly Twitter).

Rubio noted that the US is committed to achieving peace for all people in the Middle East region.

About the fact that the United States will take control of the Gaza Strip, Trump said the day before during a press conference. He added that the United States would own it and be responsible for its reconstruction, The New York Times specified.

Also on February 4, Trump proposed to relocate refugees from the Gaza Strip to more livable places. He told reporters that a hypothetical resettlement of Palestinians could take place in Egypt or Jordan, two countries that have repeatedly rejected the idea of accepting large numbers of Palestinian refugees, or in "other places" that "could be very beautiful, safe and nice."

The situation in the Middle East escalated on the morning of October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a massive rocket attack from the Gaza Strip into Israel. On the same day, Israel began retaliatory strikes
