The plan of the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen to accelerate the conclusion of trade relations, directed against US President Donald Trump, threatens French farmers. This was stated by Florian Philippot, leader of the French Patriots party, on January 27.

Earlier on Monday, Politico reported that the European Union (EU) has stepped up work on trade agreements with Mexico, Switzerland and Malaysia due to the threat of the Trump administration's protectionist policies in the US.

"French farmers better be on their guard: the EU will crush them if they don't react! If we don't react collectively," the politician wrote on his social network X (former Twitter) page, commenting on von der Leyen's conclusion of the agreement with Mexico.

According to Filippo, the EC president is not interested in France's opinion on the Mercosur (Southern Common Market) issue. Moreover, she is acting in the interests of Berlin over Paris' objections.

Filippo called on French citizens to fight the EU before it "kills the French" and called von der Leyen's actions "complete madness."

Earlier, on January 26, Philippot said that sanctions against Russia, which are weakening the EU, should be lifted. The party head called anti-Russian restrictionist measures stupid.

Before that, on December 19, 2024, it was reported that the leaders of some European Union countries are annoyed that von der Leyen makes decisions independently and asked the new head of the European Council, António Costa, to "moderate" her. At issue is the EC chief's decision to sign the EU's trade agreement with the Southern Common Market, which has caused disagreements between France, Germany and Belgium.

Mercosur is an economic and political agreement on a common market of South American countries. The community was founded in 1991 and today includes Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay
