The Sakhalin Region is preparing to launch Russia's first hydrogen-fueled passenger train, which is planned to be used on one of the routes of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk agglomeration. This was announced on September 4 by the press service of the regional government.

According to the authorities, the train will be built by the end of 2026 at Transmashholding's Demikhovo Machine-building Plant. The company noted that the project will be unique in terms of technology and engineering solutions.

"This is an important initiative to introduce environmentally friendly modes of transport in our country," RIA Novosti quoted Governor Valery Limarenko as saying.

It is noted that the last stage of testing of the composition will take place on Sakhalin. The train's commissioning is tentatively scheduled for late 2027 or early 2028. Such vehicles are designed to operate on non-electrified sections of railways.

The concept of Russia's first hydrogen train was presented at the Far Eastern Economic Forum in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk in 2024. Hydrogen fuel is considered an ideal option for public transport, as it is environmentally friendly, does not pollute the environment and is a renewable resource.

Russian Transport Minister Andrey Nikitin announced on August 16 that unmanned vehicles will appear in an experimental mode in five or six more regions of the country. Unmanned trams and metro trains are already being tested in Moscow and St. Petersburg. According to the minister, expanding the geography of the experiment will allow us to build a base for further implementation throughout the country.
