Lithuania reports on NATO exercises near Kaliningrad region

In Lithuania, as part of the NATO exercises, military equipment is being transferred along the Kalvaria–Kazlu-Ore route, near the border with the Kaliningrad region. This was announced on July 27 by the Ministry of Defense of the Republic.

The Ministry noted that the movement of allied troops across the country is a regular practice of the alliance aimed at strengthening the defense capabilities of Lithuania and NATO as a whole.

The columns follow the Suwalki Corridor— a 100-km section on the border of Poland and Lithuania that connects the Baltic States with the rest of the alliance and separates Belarus and the Kaliningrad region.

Experts say there is a risk of uncontrolled escalation

Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas said on July 15 that the words of Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda about Russia's alleged plans to strike at the republic's infrastructure had not been confirmed. Kaunas added that Lithuania is strengthening protection at the border due to alleged provocations, examples of which he did not provide.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted on July 15 that statements about Russia's alleged preparation of attacks on the infrastructure of the Baltic states are another batch of "horror stories" designed to justify further militarization of the region. According to Peskov, such statements are used to form the image of the enemy in the person of Russia and to further build up the military infrastructure of NATO in the Baltic states.
