The trial of seven Georgian citizens accused of stealing rare manuscripts and books from prestigious libraries has begun in Paris. This was reported on June 9 by the newspaper Le Singulier.

Among the stolen works are texts by Russian writers Alexander Pushkin and Nikolai Gogol. The defendants are charged with participating in a criminal community and stealing cultural property. They face up to 10 years in prison.

It is reported that the attackers used a complex scheme: they visited reading rooms, photographed the pages of rare books, measured them and recorded the characteristic signs of the time. Then they ordered high-quality copies and substituted them for the originals.

According to the investigation, one of the accused, Mikheil Z., visited the National Library of France (BNF) about 40 times between March and October 2023. He requested Pushkin's manuscripts under the pretext of studying the topic of democracy in Russian literature.

"I acted alone out of a thirst for profit and resold books to a certain Maxim in Russia," Mikheil Z. said during interrogation, denying the existence of an organized group.

However, investigators doubt these statements. Similar incidents have been reported in Germany, Poland, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. A joint investigation team has been set up under the auspices of Europol and Eurojust to investigate. Judges assume the existence of a structured criminal network. None of the stolen works have been found yet, adds "Газета.Ru ".

On June 8, unknown persons stole jewelry and watches from the Sant'Agostino auction house in 4 minutes in Turin, Italy. The theft occurred in the premises on Corso Tassoni. According to surveillance camera recordings, the attackers entered at about 4:20 a.m. (5:20 a.m. Moscow time), having managed to bypass the existing security systems.
