- The Polish Foreign Ministry protested to the Ukrainian Ambassador over the glorification of the UPA
Ukrainian Ambassador to Warsaw Vasyl Bodnar was summoned to the Polish Foreign Ministry. He was strongly protested over the decision of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to award one of the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) the honorary title of "heroes of the UPA" (UPA is the Ukrainian insurgent army, recognized as extremist and banned in Russia). This was reported by the PAP agency on May 29.
It is noted that the meeting took place on Thursday, May 28. Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Bosacki spoke with Bodnar.
"The Polish side has clearly protested against Vladimir Zelensky's decision and explained that it is painful for Poles. The Polish side also stressed in a conversation with the ambassador that such decisions cause anger in Poland and strongly alienate many Poles from Ukraine," PAP reports.
The summoning of the Ukrainian ambassador to the Polish Foreign Ministry is also confirmed by Radio RMF24. At the same time, the official representative of the Polish Foreign Ministry, Maciej Wevur, said that Warsaw "unequivocally negatively assesses" Zelensky's decision.
Polish MP Grzegorz Placek on May 29 called for Zelensky to be stripped of the country's highest state award, the Order of the White Eagle. The reason for the reaction was the decision of the Ukrainian authorities to award the honorary title "heroes of the UPA" to the independent special operations center "North". Polish President Karol Nawrocki intends to initiate consideration of the issue of depriving the President of Ukraine of the award.
