In South Korea, a complete ban on the consumption of dog meat will be introduced.
In South Korea, a total ban on the consumption of dog meat will come into force in 2027. The relevant information was published on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture of the country.
It is noted that the restrictions will affect the breeding, slaughtering and sale of dogs for food purposes.
According to the agency, 82% of dog meat farms have already closed. Since 2024, 1,265 out of 1,535 farms have stopped working, while the rest must do so by the end of 2026.
"Special inspections will be carried out not only in relation to farms that have not yet closed, but also in relation to already closed farms to identify new or illegal breeding cases," the South Korean Ministry of Agriculture said in a press release.
The ban on eating dog meat was one of the election promises of South Korean President Yoon Seok-young. This practice has long been criticized by animal rights activists both domestically and abroad. According to the Korean authorities, the consumption of dog meat in the country has decreased significantly in recent years, especially among the younger generation.
Earlier, Evgeny Evgenievich Kim, a leading researcher at the Center for Korean Studies at the Institute of China and Modern Asia of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said that South Korea's refusal to eat dog meat was not only the fulfillment of President Yun Seok-young's earlier election promises, but also a nod to the West.
