An international expedition led by the University of Gothenburg has discovered six previously unknown Bronze Age mining sites in Spanish Extremadura. The discovery may explain where the metal for making Scandinavian artifacts came from. This was reported on April 29 in the journal Science Daily.

The researchers recorded six separate mining sites, ranging from small quarries to large and technically complex facilities. One of the sites deserves special attention, where about 80 grooved stone axes used for crushing ore were found. The mines contain copper, lead, and silver, metals that played a key role in the Bronze Age economy and were widely circulated in early European trade networks.

"The newly discovered Bronze Age mines discovered over the past 10 years, both by other research groups and during our work, which documented about 20 new mines from 2024 to 2026, are changing our understanding of how interconnected Europe was already 3,000 years ago," said Professor Johan Ling.

According to the scientist, the finds indicate that metal mining in southwestern Europe was much larger and more organized than previously thought, and provide a specific archaeological context for chemical and isotopic data on long-range trade relations of the Bronze Age.

On April 27, Science Daily magazine reported the identification of a "golden ball" found in the Gulf of Alaska as the remains of a giant deep-sea anemone. It was clarified that this anemone belongs to the species Relicanthus daphneae. The analysis showed that the object belongs to the shooting group, which also includes corals.
