The Interior Ministry warned about the theft of a Telegram account under the guise of logging into a new chat

Scammers began to use a new fraud scheme in the Telegram messenger related to the theft of accounts. This was announced on March 3 by the Department for the organization of the fight against the illegal use of information and communication technologies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation.

"Attempts to gain unauthorized access to user accounts in the Telegram messenger under the pretext of "moving the chat" continue," the department's Telegram channel says.

The department clarified that the attackers were sending messages about the alleged loss of access to the chat by the administrator and the need to switch to a new group. To connect, users are asked to confirm that they are not a robot by clicking the appropriate button.

After that, the victim is asked to enter a five-digit code. As explained in the department, this set of numbers is actually an access code to a personal page in the messenger. The transfer of such data allows third parties to gain control of the account.

New code: hackers are twice as likely to use AI for attacks

They create phishing emails and deepfakes, as well as write scripts for malware.

On February 26, the Russian Interior Ministry reported that the attackers were posing as delivery service employees and using the Telegram messenger to lure the code from the Gosuslugi portal. The agency advised not to transfer any codes to unknown persons, and to check the delivery status, use only official websites.
