Residents of Minneapolis regularly go out to protest and gather at the site of the death of nurse Alex Jeffrey Pretty, who was shot dead by agents of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). On January 30, local residents shared their feelings after the murder with Izvestia correspondent Nikolai Masterov.

On January 24, Fox News reported that a border patrol officer opened fire on an armed man in Minneapolis. Later it became known that the injured man had died. The NBC News channel clarifies that the deceased was 37-year-old nurse Alex Jeffrey Pretty. It is alleged that he was not carrying any weapons. He was trying to help a local woman fight off the security forces.

Candles, flowers, stuffed animals and posters are constantly appearing at the place of Pretty's death. On the wall near the memorial there is a large black poster with the inscription "Rest in power, Alex" (literally "Rest in power"). This expression is used to mourn the dead of people who fought against prejudice, such as racism. Volunteers provide the audience with hot food and drinks.

According to one of the visitors, from 100 to 150 people regularly gather at the memorial event, turning the mourning place into a point of attraction for the entire district. Eyewitnesses call the incident madness.

"This is unacceptable. I think we're all going through a collective trauma. And I don't think even my tone right now conveys how crazy it all is. Yes, it's cruel. <...> The only thing that helps me feel better now is to be here, in this place of memory, and to be with other people, to share, to help," said a volunteer who participates in the memorial event.

Another local resident, Bobby, compared Pretty's murder to the death of George Floyd in 2020, which then provoked widespread unrest across the country.

"Minneapolis has a history of rallying around things like this. <... So this is not something new for the city. This is what we have been fighting for for years," he said.

Bobby also stressed that the struggle for justice has not stopped after the events of 2020, but has only "become quieter," and the community continues its activities.

The Wall Street Journal reported on January 25 that the US administration is reviewing all the circumstances of the shooting in Minneapolis, and Trump made it clear that the presence of federal agents in Minneapolis may be temporary. Meanwhile, mass strikes with almost 100 thousand participants against the ICE service took place in Minnesota.

Trump, in turn, expressed bewilderment at the public outcry over the shooting involving a federal agent in Minneapolis. He pointed out the circumstances of the incident and asked about the actions of law enforcement agencies on the spot.

Back in early January, a 37-year-old American woman was shot dead in Minneapolis during an operation involving ICE agents. According to the Ministry of Internal Security, she allegedly tried to use a car to hit employees and escape.
