- Scientists have learned about a decrease in internal pressure in the eyes when sleeping without pillows
New research results show that sleeping without pillows can help reduce high intraocular pressure (IOP). in people with glaucoma. Scientists claim that this prevents damage to the optic nerve and improves the quality of life. This was reported on January 27 by Medical Xpress magazine.
According to the researchers, pillows stacked on top of each other can change position by compressing the jugular vein. This disrupts the normal drainage of intraocular fluid and, consequently, increases blood pressure. The IOP is said to fluctuate depending on changes in body position. Experts called the transition from a vertical to a horizontal position before bedtime the main reason for its increase at night.
The study involved 144 people with glaucoma. Scientists assessed them by their pressure level. The results showed that the highest pressure is observed in the position with pillows (altitude 20-35 degrees). When using pillows, a decrease in pressure in the small vessels of the eye was also noted.
The scientists noted that changes in body position can significantly affect intraocular pressure, and suggested postural modification as a promising strategy for the treatment of glaucoma that does not require medication. It is emphasized that the results of the study need to be confirmed and further studied.
On January 20, National Geographic magazine reported a reduction in blood pressure while maintaining the DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension). It was clarified that this diet has remained the most effective for several decades. According to the publication, systolic blood pressure can decrease as early as a few weeks after the start of maintaining such a diet.
