NPK announces withdrawal of its troops from Greenland
Norway has begun withdrawing its troops from Greenland. This was reported on January 19 by the NPK TV channel.
"On January 15, the armed forces sent two staff officers to Greenland. They should return home this week," the publication says, citing a spokesman for the armed forces.
It is noted that the Norwegian officers participated in the initial stage of work related to the assessment of possible areas for further cooperation with the allies in order to strengthen security in the Arctic.
The Bild newspaper reported on January 15 that the first military personnel from European countries arrived in Greenland amid statements by US President Donald Trump about the need for the island to join the United States. According to the publication, the Hercules military transport aircraft of the Danish army landed at the airport of the capital of Greenland Nuuk, later units from Germany, the Netherlands, Canada, Sweden, Great Britain and Norway also went to Greenland.
At the same time, on January 17, Trump announced the introduction of US duties of 10% with the possibility of an increase to 25% against a number of European countries in connection with the situation around Greenland. It was clarified that starting from February 1, 2026, tariffs will apply to Sweden, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
