Rospotrebnadzor specialists were sent to Novokuznetsk maternity hospital for investigation

A group of Rospotrebnadzor specialists was sent to Novokuznetsk maternity hospital No. 1, where nine babies died, to conduct an epidemiological investigation. This was announced on January 13 by the press service of the department.

"A group of employees of the central office and experts from scientific research organizations of Rospotrebnadzor has been sent to Novokuznetsk to conduct an epidemiological investigation and laboratory tests at the Novokuznetsk maternity hospital," the message says.

Rospotrebnadzor stressed that the situation with the investigation of the causes of the tragedy is under special control of the department.

Two criminal cases have been initiated

Obstetric hospital No. 1 of the G.P. Kurbatov City Clinical Hospital No. 1 in Novokuznetsk temporarily stopped receiving patients due to an excess incidence of respiratory infection. Later, on January 13, it became known about the death of nine babies in the hospital during the New Year holidays. The UK confirmed the death of newborns. As the source of Izvestia noted, all infants were diagnosed with either intrauterine or neonatal infection, which gave critical complications.

A criminal case has been opened into the incident in accordance with Part 3 of Article 109 of the Criminal Code ("Causing death by negligence"), Part 3 of Article 293 of the Criminal Code ("Negligence"). The governor of Kuzbass, Ilya Seredyuk, temporarily dismissed the chief physician of the Novokuznetsk maternity hospital. Later, he said that all maternity hospitals and perinatal centers in the Kemerovo region — Kuzbass will be checked for readiness for difficult cases after the death of infants.

The press service of the Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the Kemerovo region reported that in September 2025, the investigation had already initiated a criminal case for causing serious harm to the mother's health after reports of an unsuccessful birth at an early stage in Novokuznetsk maternity hospital No. 1. Then a resident of Novokuznetsk posted a post in which she reported that during the birth of her sister, the child was torn off his arm, as a result of which the newborn died.
