The governor of Kuzbass announced the inspection of all maternity hospitals in the region after the deaths of children

All maternity hospitals and perinatal centers in the Kemerovo region — Kuzbass will be checked for readiness for difficult cases after the deaths of nine babies in the maternity hospital No. 1 Novokuznetsk. This was announced on January 13 by the governor of the region Ilya Seredyuk.

"I set the task for the Minister of Health of Kuzbass, Andrei Tarasov, to check all maternity hospitals and perinatal centers in the region for readiness for the most difficult cases," he wrote on his Telegram channel.

Seredyuk added that the inspection of maternity hospital No. 1, where the tragedy occurred, continues. According to him, on Wednesday, January 14, a group of federal specialists will arrive in the region to evaluate the work of the institution.

Two criminal cases have been initiated

On the same day, obstetric hospital No. 1 of the G.P. Kurbatov City Clinical Hospital No. 1 in Novokuznetsk temporarily stopped receiving patients due to an excess incidence of respiratory infection. Later it became known about the death of nine babies in the hospital during the New Year holidays. The UK confirmed the death of newborns. As the source of Izvestia noted, all infants were diagnosed with either intrauterine or neonatal infection, which gave critical complications.

A criminal case has been opened into the incident in accordance with Part 3 of Article 109 of the Criminal Code ("Causing death by negligence"), Part 3 of Article 293 of the Criminal Code ("Negligence"). The governor of Kuzbass, Ilya Seredyuk, temporarily dismissed the chief physician of the Novokuznetsk maternity hospital.

The press service of the Investigative Department (SU) of the Investigative Committee (IC) for the Kemerovo region reported that in September 2025, the investigation had already initiated a criminal case on causing serious harm to the mother's health after reports of an unsuccessful birth at an early stage in Novokuznetsk maternity hospital No. 1. Then a resident of Novokuznetsk posted a post in which she reported that during during the birth of her sister, the child's arm was torn off, as a result of which the newborn died.
