- A scandal broke out in the Czech Parliament after Speaker Okamura's words about Ukraine
Representatives of the opposition Czech parties began preparing the voting procedure for the removal of the leader of the SPD (Freedom and Direct Democracy) movement from the post of speaker Tomio Okamura after his, in their opinion, harsh statements about Ukraine, which should be held in the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament. This was announced on Friday, January 2, by the CHTK agency.
According to the agency, the initiators of the procedure consider Okamura's statements made in a New Year's address to the nation unacceptable for a politician who holds one of the key positions in parliament — he said that the Czech Republic should not spend taxpayers' money to purchase weapons for Kiev and support the conflict.
The speaker stated that, in his opinion, Western companies and governments, as well as representatives of the Ukrainian elite, benefit from what is happening. In addition, he expressed doubt about the expediency of Ukraine's possible accession to the European Union (EU) and expressed the hope that this would not happen.
"The leaders of the former ruling five-party government coalition, and now the opposition Civic Democratic Party, the Czech Pirate Party, the STAN and TOR 09 movements, as well as the Christian Democratic Movement have agreed on a joint voting procedure on Okamura's resignation," the article says.
It also clarifies that the initiators expressed the hope of receiving support from at least some deputies from the ruling coalition.
On November 6, 2025, Okamura succeeded in removing the Ukrainian flag from the building of the Chamber of Deputies. The process took place under solemn music and ended with the slogan "The Czech Republic comes first!".
