Scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences have developed a new species of carp, almost completely devoid of intermuscular bones, which usually makes fish difficult to eat. Using CRISPR gene editing technology, the researchers deactivated the gene responsible for the growth of these bones, while preserving the basic skeleton of the fish. Carp is considered a delicacy, but small bones often make it unpleasant for some people. Now Chinese scientists have created a new type of fish that contains almost no bones. This was achieved by deactivating the gene responsible for bone growth.
"It is currently being discussed how to commercialize this carp, devoid of intermuscular bones, which means the completion of the project. Using the example of a boneless model, we see that only the main bones remain — the ribs and spine, and all the small intermuscular bones have disappeared. The main achievement is the removal of these tiny bones, which have always caused inconvenience when eating fish. The main bones cannot be removed, because if they are removed, the fish will not survive," said Gui Jianfang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Scientists also claim that the new fish species will grow faster and stronger, and will also be resistant to change.
On December 25, Science Daily magazine reported the discovery in Bolivia of a fish, the rare seasonal killifish Moema claudiae, which was considered extinct. It was clarified that after the destruction of its original habitat more than 20 years ago, the individual was not observed. The discovery made it possible for the first time to photograph fish in their natural habitat and obtain new data on their behavior and ecology.
