Archaeologists have discovered an abandoned staircase to the "lost Pompeii"
A forgotten staircase leading to the "lost Pompeii" has been discovered in the Archaeological Park of Pompeii at Villa Tiasa. The discovery opens up new horizons in understanding life in the ancient city. This was reported on December 15 by Popular Mechanics magazine.
The "Lost Pompeii" are the upper floors of buildings that are crucial for understanding life in the ancient city," explained Gabriel Zuchtrigala, director of the park.
Using digital archaeology, a research team from Humboldt University of Berlin and the Archaeological Park created models of rich people's villas, showing that Pompeii's largest villas probably had towers symbolizing power and wealth.
The scientists paid special attention to Villa Tiasa, famous for its banquet hall decorated with frescoes. A huge staircase was also discovered in the house, which seemed to lead nowhere. Instead of focusing on the ground floor, the researchers decided to look up.
Using digital archaeology and 3D modeling, the team of scientists reconstructed the lost elements of the city, suggesting that the staircase in the Tiassa house could lead to a tower from which the owners of the villa could observe the city and the Bay of Naples, as well as the night sky.
"The interior of the lower part was simple. This contrasted with the monumental external staircase leading to the upper floor, which indicates a more elegant and representative character of the living space," the text of the study says.
The digital reconstruction allegedly allows to recreate the lost parts of Pompeii and helps to understand what the spaces and society of that time looked like.
On July 18, 2024, The Guardian newspaper reported that scientists had identified one of the main causes of death in Pompeii. It was clarified that one of the causes was an earthquake that occurred simultaneously with the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. It was assumed that there could also be more than one seismic event.
