Excessive sugar intake provokes a wide range of disorders, from fatigue and sleep problems to the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and cognitive decline. This was reported on December 10 in the Verywell Health journal.

Experts have recorded an increase in diseases associated with high doses of added sugar. Nutritionists emphasized that an excess of sweets affects not only the metabolism, but also the functioning of the brain, liver, skin and cardiovascular system.

Excessive consumption of sweets causes glucose spikes, which are quickly replaced by a decline in strength. Frequent fluctuations in blood sugar disrupt the natural energy balance, increasing fatigue. Doctors noted that excess sugar is also associated with difficulty falling asleep due to increased cortisol levels.

Sweets stimulate the growth of acid-producing bacteria that destroy enamel. The more often a person consumes sugary drinks and foods, the higher the risk of tooth damage. In addition, sugar can worsen the body's response to insulin. This increases the inflammatory processes, disrupts the sebaceous glands and creates conditions for acne. Separate studies show that excess glucose accelerates skin aging by destroying collagen through the glycation process.

As noted in the article, foods with added sugars are high in calories, but contain almost no nutrients. Due to the lack of protein and fiber, they do not saturate, which provokes overeating. Prolonged consumption leads to metabolic disorders and weight gain. In addition, high sugar intake is associated with an increase in blood pressure, an increase in visceral fat and inflammation, which are key factors in the development of cardiovascular diseases. Against the background of sweets, triglyceride levels rise and "good" cholesterol decreases.

Experts advised limiting the proportion of added sugars to 10% of the daily calorie content, and a number of studies suggest reducing the figure to 25 grams per day. Natural sugars from fruits and whole foods are digested differently and do not carry a comparable risk.

The first signs of sugar overload are headaches, loss of strength, appetite spikes, thirst, skin rashes and weight gain. To reduce consumption, it is also recommended to read labels, replace sugary drinks with water, choose whole foods more often, and minimize desserts.
