Sleep disorders and circadian rhythm disruptions can weaken heart function and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. This was reported on December 10 in the journal Medical Xpress.

Circadian biorhythms coordinate key physiological processes, from sleep and eating to activity levels. When the light mode is disrupted, for example, during shift work or daylight saving time, the body's internal clock begins to work erratically. According to Lorrie Kirshenbaum, director of the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, such desynchronization affects the heart especially noticeably.

The specialist explained that at night, a natural "cleansing" system is activated in the heart cells. The mechanism removes damaged proteins, maintaining stable cell function. Due to the accumulation of cellular debris, the normal function of cardiomyocytes is disrupted, which can lead to diseases.

A team of scientists studied the genes that regulate cellular quality control and found out why even minor fluctuations in sleep schedules can have a strong effect. Researchers are testing potential therapeutic approaches, from drugs that mimic biological clock signals to behavioral strategies that help humans synchronize sleep and activity.

Scientists have also expanded the study beyond Earth. In partnership with NASA, the team studied how microgravity and the lack of a normal day-night cycle affect the astronauts' hearts. According to Kirshenbaum, astronauts on board the ISS observe up to 16 sunrises and sunsets in 90 minutes, and the heart changes shape in zero gravity. These data help to better understand the effects of disturbed sleep and rhythms on cardiac function in patients on Earth.

On November 25, Science Daily magazine reported on the ability of tea and cocoa to protect the heart from the harm of prolonged sitting. It was noted that this protection is due to the flavanols contained in these drinks.
