Scientists talked about the benefits of iron in anemia and bacterial infections
Intravenous iron administration increases hemoglobin levels in patients with iron deficiency anemia and hospitalized with acute bacterial infection. This was reported in the journal Medical Xpress.
"Our data show that intravenous iron supplementation is safe for patients with iron deficiency anemia and acute bacterial infection, and that patients receiving intravenous iron supplementation have higher hemoglobin levels," said lead author Dr. Haris Sohail.
Intravenous iron administration is the standard treatment for severe iron deficiency anemia, but its use in patients with active bacterial infection has long been considered controversial. In laboratory studies, some bacteria can multiply in the presence of iron, although this effect has not been confirmed in humans.
In the new study, researchers analyzed more than 85,000 patients over the age of 18 who were hospitalized with one of the five most common bacterial infections: pneumonia (27,000 cases), urinary tract infections (23,000), methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (15,000), skin infection (13,000) and colitis (7,000)., as well as 143 patients with bacterial meningitis.
The results showed that in patients with any infection other than meningitis, iron significantly reduced the risk of death and increased hemoglobin levels. In cases of bacterial meningitis, no improvement was observed, but treatment did not worsen outcomes.
"Our results confirm the feasibility of using intravenous iron preparations as a safe adjunctive therapy for patients hospitalized with iron deficiency anemia and acute bacterial infection," Sohail concluded.
On November 17, Ekaterina Dmitrenko, a doctor, told us how foods can help raise our mood. She noted that magnesium plays a key role in the absorption of vitamin D, especially in the autumn-winter period, when its levels decrease in most people.
