Scientists have named six ultraprocessed products harmful to metabolism
New research continues to show the negative effects of a diet high in ultra-processed foods on health, including effects on metabolism. These foods can interfere with how the body processes and stores energy, regulates blood sugar levels, and maintains fat balance. This was reported by Today magazine on November 26.
Walter Willett, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, explained that metabolism is a "biological mechanism" that helps the body convert food and drinks into energy, repair tissues, regulate hormones and glucose levels, and decide whether to burn or store energy. Lisa Yang, PhD, dietitian and associate professor of Nutrition at New York University, agreed with this.
Soda, sweetened fruit drinks, and energy drinks cause spikes in blood sugar, contributing to insulin resistance, an increase in visceral fat, and a decrease in the body's ability to switch between burning carbohydrates and fats. According to Willett, these drinks increase the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
It also clarifies that processed meat products contain saturated fats, sodium, preservatives, and compounds formed during processing at high temperatures, which leads to inflammation, decreased insulin sensitivity, and fat accumulation in the liver. In particular, there is a lot of salt in such products, which affects blood pressure.
Candies, cookies, cakes, and donuts contain refined starches, oils, and additives that make them easy to overeat and quickly make you hungry again. These foods increase blood sugar levels, which contributes to accelerated fat gain and decreased metabolic efficiency.
Health is also harmed by chips, crackers, and other salty snacks, which are associated with an increased risk of overweight, obesity, belly fat, and cardiovascular disorders. These snacks contain high levels of sodium, saturated fats, and refined carbohydrates, while having virtually no nutritional value.
Many frozen dinners or processed foods fall into the category of the most heavily processed foods and are associated with negative health effects. They can lead to deterioration of glucose metabolism, insulin resistance, increased fat mass and changes in hunger hormones.
Experts called fast food a real threat. Burgers, French fries, and smoothies contain high amounts of salt, refined carbohydrates, and added sugars. Regular consumption of fast food can worsen insulin sensitivity, promote inflammation and metabolic disorders.
It is claimed that switching to a diet dominated by vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and low-fat protein prepared at home will not only improve your well-being and appearance, but will also change the way your metabolism works. Simple substitutes, such as choosing low-sodium foods or low-calorie snacks, can have a significant impact on improving metabolic health.
Earlier, on November 24, Science Daily magazine reported on the ability of ultra-processed foods to change the diet. According to the publication, the appropriate diet displaces fresh and minimally processed foods and dishes from the diet. Such changes are allegedly fueled by powerful global corporations that make large profits on the back of large-scale marketing of ultra-processed products.
