Romania allowed the state to purchase Lukoil's assets in the country
The Romanian authorities will carefully consider the possibility of buying Lukoil's assets in the country. This was announced on November 10 by Radu Burnet, Presidential Adviser on Economic Issues, to Digi24 TV channel.
"Any such transaction that takes place in Romania is analyzed and authorized by the Foreign Direct Investment Review Commission. Thus, everything that Lukoil decides to transfer must pass through the filter of the Romanian state," Burnet said.
He also stressed that the oil refinery in Ploiesti, owned by Lukoil, provides up to 25% of Romania's oil refining needs, and some of the products are shipped to Moldova. According to the adviser, the shutdown of the enterprise due to sanctions or a change of ownership may affect the energy stability of the region.
Burnet admitted that the Romanian state may consider the option of acquiring Lukoil's assets if its sale does not take place, but the final decision will remain with the owner of the company. He also confirmed that the authorities are carefully studying a potential deal with the Cypriot company Gunvor, which had previously expressed interest in buying Lukoil's foreign assets.
On October 22, the US Treasury Department announced that the United States was imposing sanctions against Russian oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil. It was clarified that these companies are included in the sanctions list for activities in the Russian energy sector.
On October 30, the press service of Lukoil reported that, against the background of the restrictions imposed, the United States and Great Britain had agreed on the sale of 100% of the international company LUKOIL International GmbH to the international commodity trader Gunvor. However, on November 6, the US Treasury Department announced its refusal to grant Gunvor a business license until the conflict in Ukraine is over. On the same day, Gunvor Group withdrew its offer to purchase Lukoil's assets.
