Researchers have learned about the health effects of using a phone before bedtime
Using a mobile phone late at night can harm not only sleep, but also overall health. Doctors say that this habit can cause a number of diseases. This was announced on October 31 by the Sohu media portal.
A study by Spanish scientists suggests that exposure to night light may be associated with an increased risk of thyroid cancer. The study took 12.8 years, and 460,000 people took part in it. It turned out that the group most exposed to light had a 55% higher risk of developing thyroid cancer compared to the group least exposed. At the same time, it is emphasized that the connection was more pronounced in women.
Scientists believe that this may be due to the effect of blue light on the secretion of thyroid hormones. It is clarified that this conclusion still requires further confirmation, but at the moment it serves as a reminder that using gadgets before going to bed is not harmless.
Liu Jing, chief physician of the psychiatric department of Beijing's Anding Hospital, noted that reading from a phone screen before bedtime increases alertness. According to a study, using screen devices for more than two hours can suppress melatonin secretion by 22% and slow down the biological clock. It is noted that the light from the screens is more intense than sunlight, and its frequent use can accelerate cell aging.
Research shows that spending time watching a screen before bedtime can worsen sleep quality. A study by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, which involved 45,000 people aged 18 to 28, found that every additional hour of phone use before bedtime increased the risk of insomnia by 59%, and sleep duration decreased by 24 minutes.
The constant use of mobile phones, especially when lying down, also leads to increased strain on the eyes and neck. If a person looks at a screen from a close distance, their ciliary muscle may weaken. This will cause eye strain and symptoms such as blurred vision.
In particular, the incorrect position of the neck can lead to straightening of the physiological curvature of the cervical spine or to deformity of the reverse curvature. Using a phone at night is also associated with increased appetite and cravings for high-calorie foods, stimulating the choice of adrenaline and dopamine, which increases emotional arousal, increases the time to fall asleep and plunges into a deep sleep phase.
Experts call the most effective method to stop using the phone an hour and a half before bedtime. In this way, a person can help the body regulate hormones, ensure the normal production of melatonin and promote sound sleep.
If there are difficulties with not using the phone, it is recommended to pay attention to details such as the minimum contract between the screen light and ambient light, and a comfortable level of screen brightness for the least strain on the eyes. In particular, it is important to keep your eyes parallel to the phone screen and not look down at it or vice versa.
Earlier, on October 7, Sohu warned about the occurrence of glaucoma when using a phone at night. It was noted that watching a phone in the dark can also dramatically dilate pupils and decrease lacrimation. In particular, a bright screen blocks the production of melatonin, which worsens the quality of sleep and causes insomnia.
