The authorities of the Altai Republic will significantly tighten the conditions for the sale of alcohol in the region in the near future in order to reduce the death rate, which has exceeded the birth rate since last year. This was announced on October 14 by the head of the region, Andrei Turchak, in his Telegram channel.

"The Ministry of Health is sounding the alarm. The death rate in the republic has exceeded the birth rate since last year. The main causes are external, including drunken accidents and poisoning, primarily with alcohol, as well as medical ones, such as diseases of the circulatory system and oncology," the publication says.

It is noted that to improve the situation, the regional authorities intend to limit the time of alcohol sales from Monday to Thursday from 11:00 to 19:00, and on Friday from 11:00 to 16:00. A total ban on the sale of alcohol will be introduced on weekends and holidays. It is not specified whether this ban will affect catering establishments.

In addition, the government is developing a ban on the sale of alcohol in shops located in apartment buildings, as well as near educational institutions and kindergartens. The authorities also intend to ban the sale of smoking mixtures and vapes, step up raids and control purchases with the participation of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Rospotrebnadzor, deputies and the public.

On October 9, Governor Georgy Filimonov said that in the Vologda region it is planned to introduce additional restrictions on the retail sale of alcohol from March 1, 2026. They will be connected to premises in apartment buildings, catering points. In addition, in the context of the implementation of the new design code of the region, illegal structures from the facades of apartment buildings, including signage of various networks, will be eliminated.
