Kasatkin's lawyer explained the court's refusal to release the basketball player.
The court refused to release Russian basketball player Daniil Kasatkin, rejecting the defense's argument about the incompleteness of the US extradition request. On October 8, the athlete's lawyer, Frederic Belo, told Izvestia about this.
According to him, the defense requested Kasatkin's immediate release, as the request does not include a translation of the certificate of authenticity into French, which contradicts Article 12 of the Extradition Convention.
"However, the Investigative Chamber considers that the Convention does not oblige to provide such a translation as a complete document of the extradition case. Therefore, she refuses to release Daniil Kasatkin on this basis," the lawyer explained.
Belo added that during the court session, the parties discussed the essence of the extradition request, which Kasatkin's defense disputes. According to the lawyers, the evidence of the athlete's involvement in the crimes mentioned in the US request is insufficient.
The decision on the case will be made on October 29, Belo concluded.
Earlier that day, the Paris court found the demand to release Kasatkin unacceptable. It was noted that the court rejected the third request from the athlete's defense for his release from prison pending a decision.
Prior to that, on July 9, Kasatkin was detained in France at the request of the United States. According to Belo, the Russian is probably accused of extortion due to the use of his computer by intruders.
On July 11, the Prosecutor General's Office of the Paris Court of Appeal informed Izvestia that the United States has 60 days to provide materials on the basketball player's extradition request. On August 27, Kasatkin's request for release under judicial supervision was rejected.
