- The Belgian Prime Minister proposed a "coalition of the willing" to become a "coalition of the paying"
On October 2, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever proposed a "coalition of the willing" to become a "coalition of the paying." According to him, representatives of the coalition led by France and the United Kingdom should invest money in Ukraine themselves.
"We need to back up our words with deeds," Euronews quoted him as saying.
The Belgian Prime minister also called on the European Commission (EC) and all EU states to provide reliable guarantees before using the frozen assets of the Russian Federation to provide loans to Kiev. In his opinion, this is a plan that may face problems within the framework of international law.
Earlier, on October 1, Reuters reported that EU leaders unanimously supported the use of frozen Russian assets to provide Ukraine with a loan of 140 billion euros. According to the agency, the EC assures that it has found a "legally justified way" to implement a mechanism in which Ukraine will be able to use the funds now, and repayment will take place at the expense of "future reparations" to Russia.
On October 2, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov compared the participants in the discussion in Europe about the confiscation of Russian assets to a gang. He added that attempts to appropriate Russian property would not go unanswered.
