The European Union (EU) wants to provide Ukraine with a loan from frozen Russian assets, bypassing Hungary. This was reported on September 27 by the Politico newspaper, citing an anonymous source.

"The purpose of the meeting (of EU leaders. — Ed.) in Copenhagen — to enlist sufficient support from other countries to isolate Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban," the European diplomat told the publication.

The publication noted that Germany, Spain, Poland and the Baltic states bordering Ukraine are key supporters of the plan, but France and Italy are wary of any ideas about using Russia's frozen assets.

Earlier, on September 26, Politico learned that the European Commission (EC) proposed changing the mechanism for extending sanctions against Russia in order to avoid a possible veto from Hungary. The Commission proposed to change the rules for extending sanctions from a unanimous vote to a qualified majority vote.

Also on the same day, the publication learned about the plans of the European Commission to allocate a loan to Kiev in the amount of 140 billion euros at the expense of frozen assets of Russia. Later, Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever said that his country would not support this decision if it was adopted, as this step would endanger not only Brussels, but the entire EU.
