Russian men's singles champion Ilya Kondratiev will not be able to participate in the World Rowing Championships in Shanghai due to the fact that the International Rowing Federation (World Rowing) did not have time to consider his application for neutral status in a timely manner. This was announced on September 21 by the President of the Russian Rowing Federation Alexey Svirin.

Thanks to his victory at the Russian Rowing Championships in late August, Kondratiev won the right to compete at the World Championships in September in China.

"Ilya Kondratiev won the men's singles, ahead of Alexander Kovalsky, but due to the established conditions and selection criteria, we were left without a representative in the men's singles at the world championships," TASS quoted Svirin as saying.

He explained that the international federation was unable to promptly verify the athlete's biography and conduct the necessary doping tests. World Rowing referred to the limited time frame, Svirin concluded.

On September 19, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that Russian athletes, as well as athletes from Belarus, will not participate in team tournaments at the Winter Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo in Italy in 2026. The organization added that individual neutral athletes will be able to participate in tournaments under the same conditions as at the Paris Games in 2024.
