Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that the issue of the possible return of the name Stalingrad to Volgograd should be decided by local residents, and it is possible to consider this issue. He stated this on September 18 at a meeting with the leaders of the parliamentary factions.

"We need to think about it. Local residents decide," the Russian leader said.

Earlier, on July 5, Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov said he was insisting that the name Stalingrad be returned to Volgograd. According to Zyuganov, the Communist Party of the Russian Federation is preparing an appropriate decision on this issue.

On April 29, Putin signed a decree naming Volgograd Airport Stalingrad. The next day, the head of state noted that there was logic in changing the name of the city itself. If we de-ideologize Stalingrad, then the concept will be associated with the victory in the Great Patriotic War (WWII), Putin said.
