- The representative of the EC informed about the desire of the organization to impose sanctions against Georgia
The European Commission (EC) is studying the possibility of imposing sanctions against the Georgian authorities and is considering suspending the visa-free regime. This was announced on September 16 by the official representative of the Foreign Policy Service of the European Union (EU), Anitta Hipper, at a briefing.
"We continue to consider various possibilities for exerting more pressure on the Georgian authorities in connection with the sharp rollback of democracy that we are witnessing," RIA Novosti quoted her as saying.
Hipper noted that the European Union is considering various options for putting pressure on the Georgian authorities, including economic sanctions and restrictions on the freedom of movement of citizens of the country.
The EU representative also stressed that political contacts with Tbilisi had significantly decreased, and financial support for the Georgian authorities had been suspended.
Earlier, on June 29, former Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili called on his supporters to continue their protests on the territory of the state. She assured that her only ambition is to save the state.
In 2024, mass protests took place in Georgia caused by the suspension of negotiations on European integration and the opposition's disagreement with the results of the parliamentary elections held in late October, the results of which Zurabishvili refused to recognize.
