- The Russian Foreign Ministry announced the loss of sovereignty by Finland and Sweden after joining NATO
Finland and Sweden, having become members of NATO, faced new problems, lost their sovereignty in the implementation of foreign policy and lost their authority on the world stage. This was announced on September 9 by Vladislav Maslennikov, Director of the Department of European Problems at the Russian Foreign Ministry.
"Before my eyes is the example of Sweden and Finland, which, instead of remaining neutral states, having joined NATO, gained only a headache for themselves — they became frontline states," he said.
Maslennikov also stressed that in accordance with the decisions of the last NATO summit, which was held in The Hague in June, Sweden and Finland are now required to increase their military spending to 5% of GDP, which is a difficult task in the context of the economic and social difficulties of these countries.
Helsinki and Stockholm have lost their credibility in the international community. No one perceives them as impartial intermediaries anymore, and now they are forced to unconditionally comply with decisions made at NATO headquarters, Maslennikov added.
The diplomat stressed that instead of gaining security, the politicians of Finland and Sweden dragged their countries into a geopolitical confrontation with serious consequences.
Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, said yesterday that at Helsinki's initiative, mutually beneficial relations between Russia and Finland had been completely destroyed. He stressed that these changes are primarily a blow to ordinary Finnish citizens. According to him, they have received serious benefits from the development of bilateral trade and economic ties with Russia, and now they are expressing dissatisfaction with the policy of their authorities, which clearly does not correspond to their interests.
