About 14 people died after police opened fire during a protest in Nepal. This was reported on September 8 by The Kathmandu Post newspaper, citing doctors.
Earlier, the Nepalese authorities imposed a ban on the activities of a number of large social networks that did not register with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology on time. The ban includes, among others, the platforms Meta (recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation), Alphabet (YouTube), X (former.Twitter), Reddit and LinkedIn. Hit Raj Pandey, a senior party organizer for the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Center), the main opposition party in parliament, called the decision unacceptable and warned that shutting down social media could lead to chaos in the country.
Local residents gathered in New Baneshwar to express their dissatisfaction with the actions of the government of the country. They protested against restrictions on social media and government corruption and were severely suppressed by police officers.
"As a result of the police shooting during the protest <...> 14 people were killed in New Baneshwar district," the hospital said.
It is specified that more than 80 people were injured and are receiving the necessary assistance, at least 10 people are in critical condition.
Earlier, on August 25, protests began in Indonesia amid growing dissatisfaction with working conditions and salaries. The demonstrations received even greater resonance after the death of a motorcycle taxi driver who was hit by a police armored vehicle on August 28.
