Around the world, World Fishing Day is celebrated on June 27, a holiday in honor of fishing enthusiasts and all those for whom fishing is not only a hobby, but also a job. In 2025, this date falls on a Friday. Izvestia has collected interesting facts about the celebration and the traditions of its celebration in Russia.

When is World Fisheries Day in 2025

Fishing is one of the most ancient crafts. In the history of mankind, it has been known since long before the advent of agriculture and cattle breeding and for a long time remained the main source of food. Today, aquatic biological resources are also among the most important and irreplaceable food products on Earth.

However, the idea to establish a holiday in honor of fishermen appeared not so long ago. It was established by the decision of the International Conference on Fisheries Regulation and Development (IUCN), which was held in Rome in the summer of 1984. In 2024, the celebration has an anniversary date — 40 years since its formation.

World Fisheries Day was first celebrated in 1985. Since then, it has been held annually in more than 100 countries around the world. One of its main goals is to raise the prestige of the profession and remind of the need to take care of aquatic biological resources.

Traditions of celebrating World Fisheries Day

On Fishing Day, seminars are held in Russia and other countries of the world, where experts make presentations on topical issues of their industry. Poaching is among the most relevant. Other issues related to ecology and the protection of rare fish populations are also being discussed.

And, of course, both professionals and amateurs cannot imagine a holiday without trips to the water. There are many contests and workshops for fishermen on the shore. For example, you can compete in fishing skills. Whoever catches the most or who gets the most weighty fish on the hook gets a new set of fishing gear and equipment as a gift, among which may be a cast-iron soup pot.

Moreover, every year more and more women can be seen at these events, who, like men, share stories about their biggest catches.

World Fisheries Day: cakes and greetings

On this day, it is customary to congratulate employees of the fish inspection, fish extraction and processing enterprises, crews of fishing vessels, students and teachers of specialized educational institutions, as well as anyone who cannot imagine their life without a fishing rod. The best gift for fishing enthusiasts will be fishing gear and hiking kits, which can be purchased at specialty stores.

"Congratulations on World Fisheries Day! I wish you and the fish to catch good luck and success on your hook, I wish you only pleasure and enjoyment from fishing, I wish you always a cool bite and a great catch!"

And according to tradition, you can wish for what fishermen usually wish for each other: good weather and excellent biting.

"May World Fisheries Day bring with it great catches for happiness and joy. I wish you to spend more time with your family and relatives, and not to give up your hobby, but to improve in it!"

Earlier, Izvestia told how Russia celebrates Fisherman's Day, which originated in the Murmansk region and is also celebrated in the height of summer.

"On this day, we wish you that every fish on the hook was the biggest and tastiest! Have a nice bite!"
