May 28 — Border Guard Day: history and traditions of the holiday
Russia celebrates Border Guard Day on May 28, a celebration of the guards of the borders of the Russian Federation, elite troops who have been providing state security for centuries. The border guards, nicknamed the "green Berets," serve in a territory stretching over 60,000 km, because Russia borders 16 states on land and two by sea. In 2025, the celebration falls on a Wednesday. Izvestia tells about the history and traditions of the significant day.
Border Guard Day in 2025 — the history of the holiday
The border troops were established on May 28, 1918 in the RSFSR by decree of the Council of People's Commissars. Initially, the unit was called the border guard, but a year later it was renamed the troops.
There are many pages in the history of the border guards: the unit came under the control of various departments, the structure and legislative framework changed, only the goals remained unchanged. After all, protecting Russia's borders has always remained one of the priorities of national security.
At the current level, the border troops are under the jurisdiction of the Federal Security Service (FSB). A significant day for the soldiers of this unit was established in 1994 "in order to revive the historical traditions of Russia and its border troops."
Border Guard Day in 2025 — holiday traditions
On the day of the professional holiday, border guard units gather for solemn reviews and marches, and high-ranking officials of the country often attend the events. The most distinguished fighters are presented with state awards and promoted in rank.
Veterans of the service also attend the celebrations. An obligatory part of the ceremony is the laying of flowers at the memorials of fallen soldiers. In addition, after the official part of the events, colleagues usually continue their celebrations in an informal setting, gathering in parks and squares. Like the paratroopers, the border guards sometimes bathe in the fountain and make solemn toasts.
Concerts and fireworks are held in many Russian cities for the Green Berets. And citizens can visit exhibitions of modern military equipment that is used to protect the borders of the Russian Federation.
Earlier, Izvestia shared postcards and congratulations on the Day of the Pacific Fleet.
