Sales of Mercedes-Benz cars may be banned in the United States
The U.S. Senate Committee on Trade has approved a bill aimed at tightening restrictions on automakers with the participation of Chinese capital. The initiative, if adopted, may also affect the German company Mercedes-Benz, according to Reuters.
According to the proposed regulations, the ban on working in the American market may apply to companies in which the share of Chinese investors exceeds 15%. According to Ted Cruz, the head of the committee, Mercedes-Benz also falls under this definition, given the almost 20 percent participation of Chinese shareholders. However, he noted that the document needs to be finalized.
Cruz also stated that certain provisions of the document are supported by the General Motors concern, which is interested in strengthening the positions of its brands. The automaker, however, stressed that this is not about competing with individual players, but about supporting American manufacturing and the global competitiveness of the industry.
The co-author of the initiative, Senator Bernie Moreno, clarified that automakers will receive a transition period until 2030, and special exceptions may also be provided. Mercedes-Benz, in turn, pointed to the significant scale of its operations in the United States and declared its readiness to take into account the requirements of the law while preserving the interests of employees, partners and customers.
On July 21, Mercedes-Benz introduced the luxury Maybach version of the GLS crossover. The model debuted in the United States, where sales of new items will start before the end of the year. Prices have not yet been disclosed, it is expected that the base model will cost from $ 200 thousand.
